Not One, But Two Fascinating Keynote Addresses

Sleep and Our Society - William Dement MD
Saturday May 12, 2012 12:55pm - 1:55pm

William C. Dement, MD, PhD is the world's leading authority on sleep, sleep deprivation and the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. He is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the Division Chief of the Stanford University Division of Sleep. In 1953, the study of sleep became a true scientific field when Dr. Dement was able to make all-night, continuous recordings of brain and eye activity during sleep. This led to his discovery of the five stages of sleep, REM activity and the relationship between REM and dreaming. In 1963, Dr. Dement joined the Psychiatry Department at Stanford University, where for the past forty-five years he has continued his studies on the neurochemistry of sleep and the functional significance of the different sleep states. In 1970, Dr. Dement founded the world's first Sleep Laboratory at Stanford University which introduced all-night polysomnographic (PSG) examination of patients. Dr. Dement was the first to understand the clinical implications of several sleep disorders, including Sleep Apnea syndromes, Narcolepsy, Periodic Leg Movement, Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome, Psychophysiological Insomnia, Drug Dependency Insomnia, and a host of other disorders. Dr. Dement has helped develop a thorough understanding of the determinants of daytime sleepiness including the demonstration that partial sleep loss is cumulative, that the circadian curve of sleepiness is biphasic, and that sleep needs must be defined in terms of daytime alertness. Since 1971, Dr. Dement continues to teach the most popular class in Stanford history (Sleep and Dreams) and focuses on public education of the dangers of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and driving when drowsy. In 1975, Dr. Dement helped to invent the Multiple Sleep Latency Test, used to measure sleepiness. Later, he proposed the measure that is still used for the clinical definition of sleep apnea and the rating of its severity, the Apnea/Hyponea Index. Dr. Dement co-founded the Sleep Research Society in 1961, was founding President of the American Sleep Disorders Association (now the AASM) and he was the founder of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Dement is the author or co-author of approximately 500 scientific publications, including "The Promise of Sleep", "Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine," (the definitive textbook in the field), and he is a founding co-editor of the premier scientific journal, "Sleep".

The Real Heroes - Dana Oakes RRT
Saturday May 12, 2012 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Dana Oakes RRT, is first and foremost, a respiratory therapist of over 40 years. He easily remembers the days of IPPB units lining the hospital hallways and has been involved in the field from its infancy in the early 1970's to what it has become today. Dana has served as a staff therapist, a hospital department director, and, as an educator and is a true veteran in all three of those areas. As the founder of Health Educator Publications, Dana wrote his first book, Clinical Practitioners Pocket Guide to Respiratory Care, known as the "Little Blue Book" in 1984. From its very first year of publication, it has been, for 28 years now, the #1 selling reference book in Respiratory Therapy, advancing through 7 editions. Since that time he has also authored or co-authored a total of eight additional titles covering subjects such as hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator management and neonatal respiratory care, amongst other titles that are actively used in countries throughout the world. Ever the educator, Dana has proudly established a solid presence in the online world as well, particularly with his new website, "RespiratoryUpdate.com," offering online versions of his books, as well as resources, tutorials and more. As much as Dana loves the field of respiratory care and pulmonary medicine, he has a deep-rooted passion for his faith as well as his family – having been married for 40 years, with two wonderful children, and an amazing grandchild who, for some reason, was able to pronounce "stethoscope" from a very early age. Dana is honored to have been invited to speak across the U.S. and Canada, in forums ranging from graduation ceremonies to national conferences, but he is particularly honored to have been invited back to speak at one of his favorite conferences, the annual Focus conference produced by his long-time friend and colleague, Bob Miglino RRT. Come hear Dana's compelling and motivational talk entitled, "The Real Heroes" and be inspired by his uplifting address best described as a "booster shot of professionalism" that will leave you proud and satisfied to be engaged in the important work we healthcare professionals do, on a daily basis.
