This one day course is designed to empower the non-physician health care professional with the skills, expertise and tools needed to educate, coach and serve as a resource to patients with sleep disorders. The course will teach attendees how to help patients navigate through the sleep health system and to encourage self-management. The course will focus on sleep disordered breathing; however, co-morbid conditions will also be discussed.

The BRPT is pleased to offer its Clinical Sleep Educator Certificate Program at the FOCUS conference. The BRPT will award qualifying participants with an assessment-based certificate as a Clinical Sleep Educator.  In addition, nurses, respiratory care practitioners, and sleep technologists can earn up to eight continuing education credits as a result of attending this program.

HISTORY

Previously, the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) sponsored an annual conference entitled Becoming a Sleep Educator.  The ACCP developed the sleep educator conference in recognition of the chronic nature of obstructive sleep apnea and general sleep disorders, knowing patients would increasingly require ongoing adjustments and interactions with health care professionals who could benefit from specialized education and training.  As recognition of, and the need for, a sleep educator grew, the ACCP collaborated with the BRPT to transfer the administration and management of the program to the BRPT.  Now in its fourth year, the Becoming a Sleep Educator Conference has evolved into the BRPT’s Clinical Sleep Educator Certificate Program.

ELIBIGILITY REQUIREMENTS

Licensed and/or certified healthcare professionals are eligible to earn the new assessment-based Clinical Sleep Educator Certificate, including nurses, sleep technologists, respiratory care practitioners, psychologists, social workers, physicians, physician assistants and health educators. The Clinical Sleep Educator Certificate Program will benefit these professionals who work with sleep medicine patients and families, or who provide community education and outreach. After meeting all program requirements, individuals must successfully complete a post-test. Individuals with an interest in sleep medicine who are not licensed and/or certified health care professionals may attend the course, but will not be eligible to earn a certificate as a Clinical Sleep Educator. The program registration fee includes the cost of the certificate.

THE NEED FOR SLEEP EDUCATORS AND A CLINICAL SLEEP EDUCATOR CERTIFICATE

The Clinical Sleep Educator Certificate Program will provide non-physician health care providers working in sleep medicine with training and education to aid in the care and management of patients with sleep disorders, primarily sleep apnea.  A certificate as a Clinical Sleep Educator recognizes the importance of health care professionals who collaborate with physicians, patients, and families in the delivery of services and management of sleep disorders. A Clinical Sleep Educator will be the liaison and point of contact for patient issues, problems, and treatments.  A certificate as a Clinical Sleep Educator emphasizes the important role of non-physician health care providers in successful disease management, community support, and the standard of care and education provided to patients and families.

Earning a certificate as a Clinical Sleep Educator is voluntary and is not required by law for employment.  However, employers may use the certificate to meet requirements for job competencies, promotions, salary increases, or other considerations.   A Clinical Sleep Educator does not diagnose, treat, or provide any such services prohibited by law or scope of practice.

THE ROLE OF A CLINICAL SLEEP EDUCATOR

A Clinical Sleep Educator communicates with patients, families, and the community to educate individuals on sleep disorders, good sleep hygiene, ways to optimize treatment, methods to improve and monitor compliance with prescribed treatment, and in general assists patients in eliminating barriers to care in order to maximize their quality of life.

The Clinical Sleep Educator:

          • Has knowledge of diagnosis and management of sleep disorders, with a focus on Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

          • Understands communication techniques for teaching and the principles of learning to enhance education for patients, families, and the community.

          • Understands what to look for and how to analyze the results of the various tests and tools used to diagnosis, evaluate, and monitor sleep disorders.

          • Knows how to assess patient compliance and comfort with treatment to improve clinical outcomes.

          • Knows when and how to communicate effectively with physicians and other health care professionals to report new or continued symptoms, persistent
treatment issues, or barriers to optimal care and management.

          • Serves as a resource to the community and other health care providers by promoting education on sleep disorders, treatment, follow up and outcomes,
as well as good sleep hygiene.

AN ASSESSMENT-BASED CERTIFICATE

The Clinical Sleep Educator is an assessment-based certificate. To receive an assessment-based certificate, the participant is required to document attendance or participation AND demonstrate that the intended learning objectives and outcomes were achieved through a proficiency exam or assessment.  The primary focus is on education and training.  There is a single course or program to provide the education and training, and it is offered by a sole provider.  Learning objectives are designed and updated to meet the needs of participants, consumers and other stakeholders.  An assessment-based certificate is not time limited and does not require subsequent activities to maintain it.  Assessment-based certificate holders are not awarded an acronym or letters for use after their names.  Holders of the Clinical Sleep Educator Certificate will be eligible to take a credentialing exam for the Clinical Sleep Educator should BRPT develop one in the future.

Until that time, BRPT will

1. Provide instruction and training to participants to achieve specific learning objectives related to clinical sleep education.
2. Evaluate achievement of the specific learning objectives with a post-test.
3. Award a certificate to participants who pass the post-test and qualify for the certificate.
